Baby Update: Jelly Bean at 14 Weeks

We had an appointment last night, and I thought I would let you know how it went.

Usually we go in, I pee in a cup, we wait forever, we finally get in, the doc takes my blood pressure, presses on my stomach, asks me a few questions, asks me if I have any questions and then sends me on my way.

Last night was a little different. At seven weeks, we did a dating ultrasound, but that night he had been called away from the clinic for an emergency surgery. By the time he got back, his waiting room was filled with patients and to be honest, he looked pretty beat. So, he printed off the ultrasound and sent it home with me. At our next appointment he asked me where it was, but since he hadn't told me to bring it back, I didn't have it. So fast forward to last night, he was looking at it for dating purposes for the first time. He asked me if I was sure about my last menstrual cycle (the preliminary way they date the pregnancy). I told him yes, and then showed him all my notes from when we were trying. He was kind of shocked. He looked a little confused so I asked him if there was a problem. He said the baby's measurements didn't match my menstrual cycle. I asked if it was bigger or smaller and he said smaller. So, I asked if that meant there was something wrong and he said we should do a new ultrasound. So, for a moment or two I was kind of freaking out.

The good news is, the baby is fine. Doctors says he/she looks strong. The heartbeat was 154 beats/minutes, which is normal. We got to see the baby move around. We got the see baby's spine, rib cage, arms, hands, legs and it even looked right at the camera once so we got to see its skeleton face. Upon measuring the new ultrasound, baby's size matches my menstrual cycle, so we are all good.

However, I did leave the appointment with a serious feeling of dread. I was asking the doctor questions about what happens after the baby is born. He told me that immediately after the baby is born, they show it to you, tell you the gender and the whisk it off for observation for 2 HOURS?!?! Um...this is going to be a subject of serious debate at our next appointment. First of all, if I push an entire human being out of my body, you better believe that I am going to hold it before you take it away. Second, um...don't babies need to eat? You can't feed him/her if I'm not there. Third, 2 hours? Really? What are you going to doing to my baby that you can't just do in my room? I talked to a guy at my school, who's wife just had a baby, and he said they only took his baby out of the room for like 30 minutes to clean her off and stuff. I'm pro having my baby cleaned up, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't take two hours. I'm going to ask around to a few more friends here who have had babies and then next month we are going to have to cover this topic again with doc.

But the good news is, our baby is fine and we have a new picture for you! Yay!

Hope you are well!
